Overly Connected October 14, 2008
Sometimes, many times actually, I start to feel overly connected. I have a Myspace, Facebook, at least 5 email accounts, some of which come with chat capabilities, this website and a real blog. I have a Yahoo! 360 page that goes with a Yahoo! Answers profile. I connect through a laptop and 2 different portable devices. Oh, and I have a blog and a chat account for work. I have flickr, picasaweb, and photobucket accounts and a YouTube page. What the heck is wrong with me? What percentage of my time is spent with all these and is it worth it? Is it entertaining and engaging? Productive? Does it matter? I suppose the question to ask is am I getting something out of it and is that something 'good'. Do you then need to define what is 'good' to you, in your life, at this moment? I don't keep up with all of them, mind you. Some of them are just things to spend time between the real moments. I still read to my kids and read real live books (I actually prefer them to e-books). I get out of the house and DO stuff...shopping, places, visit family. Am I just that needy for constant stimulation? And was I like this previously, just unaware? It's not like I do this out of job necessity or security. Which reminds me that I'm also on some other career related social network. Dang it. It's hard to keep track of them. One almost needs a centralized portal. Wait. I think I have something for that too...a delicious bookmarking account. This is why I like vacations in the mountains in a cabin with no internets and no tv. But, then thats when you bring the portable gaming systems. And the phone(s). Can't go camping without the phones. Aarrggh. At least social networking doesn't take up physical space in my house. Shweww.
